Palm growth and production can be limited by water deficits in many oil palm producing areas.

Yara’s crop nutrient recommendations help the crop make more productive use of water through encouraging strong growth and high yields, leading to more transpiration and less drainage and direct evaporation.

For example:-

• Use of phosphorous encourages rooting, ensuring better extraction of water from the soil over the life of the plantation.

• Potassium is important for efficient, optimal regulation and control of CO2 uptake and water

loss through the stomata. This is essential for the palm to make best use of available water • By using comprehensive, tailored, fertilizer programmes that ensures no nutrient is lacking, yield is increased, producing a higher FFB weight for each mm of water that is available (Figure 21).
